When Z’s mom inquired about the Youth Volunteer Corps program at Brookfield Zoo in 2009, she had no idea the journey and growth that lay ahead of her daughter in the years that followed. Z started in the program in 2010 and served as a volunteer for four years. In that time, she volunteered over 600 hours! Z’s main role was to provide interpretation to zoo guests, educating them about the animals, their exhibits, and their conservation stories. Z was a quick learning and picked up animal information and facts in no time. She was able to connect with guests of all ages and ability levels and went on to mentor dozens of peers as a leader in the program.
